Photography in Rome: An Elegant Morning at Piazza Navona

There is something special about being photographed in Rome. The city has a way of making even an ordinary moment feel timeless — a beautiful street, the warm colour of ancient buildings, the sound of a fountain, the soft morning light falling across the stone. For photography in Rome, Rome offers an extraordinary setting. But beautiful surroundings are only part of the story. The real purpose of a portrait photoshoot is to create photographs that feel personal: images that capture not only how you looked at a particular moment, but something of who you were.

For this recent portrait photoshoot in Rome, I chose Piazza Navona as the setting. The elegant architecture, Baroque fountains and generous proportions of the square created a natural harmony between the woman in front of my camera and the city around her.

A Portrait Photoshoot in Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona is one of the most recognisable locations in Rome and one of my favourite places for elegant outdoor portraits. It is one of the great spaces of Baroque Rome, surrounded by historic buildings and three fountains, including Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s celebrated Fountain of the Four Rivers. It is a location where history, architecture, art and everyday Roman life meet.

Why an Early Morning Photoshoot Makes a Difference

Piazza Navona can become very busy during the day. For an intimate portrait session, I prefer to work in the early morning, before the square fills with visitors.

Arriving early gives us more space, greater freedom to move and, most importantly, a quieter atmosphere. The morning light can also be wonderfully soft and directional, allowing the architecture to become part of the portrait rather than simply a background. There is also something poetic about seeing Rome before the day has fully begun.

More Than Beautiful Photographs

A professional portrait session is not simply about having photographs taken.

It is an opportunity to pause.

Every stage of our lives is different. We change in small ways — in our appearance, our style, our expressions and in the way we see ourselves. A portrait can preserve something of that particular moment and transform it into a lasting memory.

This is one of the reasons I love portrait photography. I want each image to communicate something personal. Rather than imposing a particular expression or pose, I look for the gestures, expressions and moments that reveal the personality of the person I am photographing. The result should feel elegant and authentic at the same time.

Finding Your Own Style

A portrait photoshoot can be whatever you want it to be. You may want something elegant and sophisticated, something more sensual, or something natural and relaxed. You might choose to have your portrait taken alone, or include someone important to you.

Your choice of clothing and location can also become part of the story. Perhaps you have a favourite dress, a particular colour you love, or an outfit that makes you feel confident. Perhaps there is a place in Rome that has special meaning for you.

My role is to bring these elements together and create a session that feels like you.

You do not need to know how to pose or have experience in front of a camera. I will guide you throughout the photoshoot, while leaving enough space for natural expressions and spontaneous moments to emerge.

A Portrait to Remember Your Time in Rome

For visitors to Rome, a professional photoshoot can become much more than a collection of holiday photographs. Instead of remembering the city only through photographs of monuments, you become part of its story.

A portrait at Piazza Navona can preserve the memory of standing beneath the Roman sky, surrounded by centuries of architecture and art. Years later, the photograph can bring you back not only to the location, but to how you felt at that particular moment.

And for those who live in Rome, a portrait session can be an equally meaningful experience — a chance to celebrate yourself, mark a new chapter or simply give yourself some time to be photographed beautifully.

An International Approach to Portrait Photography in Rome

My approach to photography has been shaped by working internationally, including in New Zealand, London and Cyprus, and by photographing people from different backgrounds and cultures.

Now based in Rome, I bring that international perspective into my portrait work here. I am interested in creating photographs that are refined without feeling artificial, elegant without losing personality, and connected to the atmosphere of the place where they were made. Rome provides an extraordinary stage. But ultimately, the portrait is about you.

Whether you are visiting the Eternal City for a holiday, celebrating a personal milestone, looking for an individual portrait session or simply want to create beautiful photographs of yourself, a Rome photoshoot can be a wonderful way to turn a moment in your life into something tangible and lasting.

Book a Portrait Photoshoot in Rome

If you are looking for a portrait photographer in Rome, I would be delighted to create a personal photoshoot around your style, personality and vision. We can choose Piazza Navona or another location in Rome that speaks to you, and plan the session around the best light and atmosphere. Come alone, bring someone special, choose your favourite clothes and allow yourself a little time to be seen. Because a beautiful portrait is not simply a photograph of how you looked.

It is a photograph of who you were, where you were and how you felt.
